Speculative Fiction Magazines Accepting Submissions

The market for speculative fiction is robust. There are scores of magazines, ezines, and websites that publish sci-fi, horror, fantasy, dark fiction, steam punk, and any combination of spec plus non-spec genres you can think of (i.e. romance/time travel, horror/humor).

Some of these markets have been fairly stable over time, but dozens are now defunct, having led short, but happy, lives. (Since I made my first list of SFF markets in 2001, roughly half have disappeared.)

As of this writing, all of these markets are alive and well, and accepting submissions. All accept electronic submissions. None of them charge a fee. (NEVER pay to publish your work.)

I've listed these publications in a rough hierarchy, with pro markets at the top (6 cents a word or more), semi-pro in the middle (between 1 and 5 cents per word) , and token (below 1 cent per word or $25 per story) and non-paying markets at the end. The most desirable markets are pro markets and those with SFWA  (Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America) qualification.

How to use this list

If you have a short story or two you would like to market, and you have a lot of time to spare, start at the top and work your way down. The pro markets don't take simultaneous submissions, which means it could take a very long time to get your story published. (One of my stories took 14 years. I'm not proud - or, apparently, in a rush.)

If you are in a hurry to get published, and simply want a writing credit, then submit to every publication that takes simultaneous submissions all at once. One of them is bound to come through.

If you are somewhere in the middle - then start in the middle with the semi-pros. They don't pay much, but putting "semi-pro" on your resume is better than advertising the fact that you are working for free.

Before you submit, establish which markets are suitable for your story. (Read their websites!)
